Summertime Adventures: Summer Snacks

Summer is a great time to get outdoors, but not all adventuring has to do with hiking up some steep mountain trail, or kayaking on a lake. Not everyone is into the great outdoors, but there is one topic that everyone can adventure and explore in. Food! Today we will be talking about snacks. Snacks are the one of the best types of food, because you get to try a variety of goodies at once. The snacks I will be talking about are featured from the beautiful country of Japan (日本).

The first featured snack is fruit gummies! I know a lot of us have grown up with the fruit gummies as a snack in lunches, but these fruit gummies from Japan are off the charts delicious. They are made with real fruit juice, so they are surprisingly juicy and really taste like the fruit. These fruits gummies come in all different flavors like strawberry, grape, blueberry, etc. So far I have only tried pear, but it was by far the best fruit gummy I have ever had.

The next snack features a character you might know well from your childhood, it’s Thomas the Tank Engine candy! This candy is called トーマスのチューイング キャンヂィ, translating exactly to Thomas’s chewing candy. It’s a little odd, because it somewhat resembles the texture and feel of gum, but it is a yummy treat to have on the go. It comes in a variety of flavors, but the ones I have seen so far were only purple grapes and green grapes.

Our next snack is one that might be more recognizable, but is still a little unknown in the U.S., rice crackers! Rice crackers are a
tasty snack and come in numerous varieties. There is original, spicy, sweet or mixes of spicy and sweet. Some varieties have more crackers with nori(seaweed) wrapped around it, so be sure to try some out and try new flavors. My friend Rachael and I really like this  party pack of assorted rice crackers called おつまみ, which literally
means “snack”. This could be a good one to start out on because it has such a big assortment of rice crackers to try.
Those are my three japanese snacks to try this week. If you want to find them, you can online or at a nearby asian food market, like Uwajimaya or Fubonns. Have fun snacking everyone!

Food Carts 101

Staying well fueled for school is very important. Clark College is very lucky to have a variety of food options for whatever your taste buds might be craving. I personally enjoy eating at food carts because I love the originality that they provide to their food, as well as the adventure of trying something new! Each food cart has something different that makes them special and unique.IMG_5065

  • The Mighty Bowl: The Mighty Bowl is a wonderful place to eat when you want to embrace your healthy side. They offer three amazing options for bowls which include: The Mighty Bowl, The Peanut Bowl, and The Kiggins Bowl. They also have salad options. My personal favorite is the Peanut Bowl because it has a very satisfactory nutty taste. The Mighty Bowl isn’t just located at Clark College, they have many locations all over the downtown Vancouver area. The Mighty Bowl’s hours are: Monday -Thursday 8:00am to 6:00pm and Friday 8:00am to 3:00pm. (*They are closed today Feb. 16th for President’s Day).
  • The College Burger: The College Burger is an amazing place to try out if you are craving burgers and/or hot dogs. This food cart has a large variety of food options, so there is something to curb any craving. If meat isn’t your thing, they also have numerous garden burger options. This place sticks out the most to me because they  serve sausage biscuits and gravy every morning. Who wouldn’t like that? So if you are dying to try this place, come check it out the next time you are on campus. Their hours are: Monday -Thursday 8:00am to 6:00pm and Friday 8:00am to 2:00pm.
  • Chewy’s Burritos: Have you ever had a burrito craving? Well I have, and this is the place I go for my burrito fix. They offer a wide variety of burritos, burrito bowls, nachos and taco salads. The amazing thing about Chewy’s is that you don’t only have the option of chicken or beef; they are now serving vegetarian, vegan, gluten and dairy free options as well. I love eating at Chewy’s because it is easy to get when you have to run between class, work, the library and etc. Their hours are: Monday -Thursday 8:00am to 6:00pm and Friday 8:00am to 2:00pm.

The next time you are on campus, I would recommend that you come check these food carts out. They all offer something different, and I’m predicting that there will be at least one thing that will spark your interest. Be adventurous, try something new!
