One of my favorite offices on campus is the Veterans Resource Center. The Veterans Resource Center is a safe and open environment with the goal of helping veterans and their dependents. They strive to highlight the resources and support services available for veterans in the community and at Clark College. Right as you walk in the door, you are greeted with a smile and they are always willing to go above and beyond for students.
When I spoke with those who work in the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) they commented on how many students do not even realize the amount of resources available to them! Hopefully this blog can shine a light on all the great things the VRC does. One of the main purposes of Clark College’s Veterans Affairs is they serve as a liaison between Clark College and the US Department of Veteran Affairs. This office will go over post 9/11 benefits, discuss veteran tuition waivers, FAFSA, and more. They are the first step for helping students set up their benefits at Clark College.
Another fantastic resource offered at the Veterans Resource Center is their textbook program. This program offers veterans a chance to rent books and materials needed to be successful in their classes, for FREE! This program relies heavily on student donations, so if you have a textbook you’re willing to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. After the first two weeks of the quarter, the program opens up to non-veterans, so don’t miss out on this great deal!
The Veteran Resource Center also offers English and math tutoring to veterans for a more hands on experience. Their office can get a little rowdy at times because everyone is such close friends, but they do have “quiet hours” for studying. They also have computers available for free printing and for veterans to do their school work. Also, the American Legion Post 176 has graciously donated money to assist our student veterans with oral care. The Veterans Resource Center has partnered with the Clark College Dental Hygiene program to provide cleanings and fillings if necessary. Stop by the Veterans Resource Center today to find out if you qualify.
With all the resources and such, it is hard to summarize just how much this office does for this community. Not only are they willing to give a helping hand to those in need, they are a big family. It’s an environment where veterans can come together and not feel the pressures of what they may be dealing with on a daily basis. Instead, it’s a place to relax and feel at home. If you ever have the time, stop by and say hi to the group, you won’t regret it!
