“Lock horns I push, and I strive. Somehow I feel more alive.”
This is a shortened quote from Metallica’s song “Better Than You”. It is about being better than the guy next to you. Your opponent. The competition. Whoever it might be, you have to be better than them. To be successful in life, you will always have to beat someone or a group of people. If you’re interviewing for a job, you have to be better than the other interviewees. In the case of trying to be a firefighter, you have to test better then sometimes thousands of other men and women. No more is this competitive ideal more relevant, than in sports.
I’ve played a few years of football in my life, and I have seen how competitive it can be. Guys getting into fights, screaming at each other or officials. Some people would call that rude or not right, but I think that it shows passion. See, when you train hours on end for a sport you are passionate, it brings out the true competition of every person involved. Competition is a beautiful thing to be a part of.
Believe it or not, there are more than 8000 sports in the world. And most all of them basically use the same concept. You have to do an activity better than your competition. Whether its football, soccer, basketball, or NASCAR, it is all the same… Being competitive and doing something better than your opponents.
