It’s that time of year again when the stores fill up with “dad and grad” balloons and cards. With commencement just a few days away, many of our penguins are getting ready to take flight and embark on the next leg of their journey. As I write this, I remember the emotion I was filled with last year when as I was able to walk alongside my accounting study mates. I am reminded of the short story by Robert Hastings called “The Station.” If you are not familiar with the story, I urge you to read it. In the story, Robert equates the journey of life to a train ride and reminds us to enjoy the ride and live in the moment.

To the graduating class of 2015, as you prepare for the completion of your time at Clark, I encourage you to reflect on all that you have overcome to achieve this goal. The sleepless nights, the study mates who pushed you- or who you pushed to study just 30 more minutes, or the professor who sparked your interest and helped you fall in love with a subject. Whatever it was that you had to face while studying here, you did, and you have achieved the goal you had when you first stepped onto our campus.

When you are standing and waiting to enter the venue, the feeling is electric. You may not know the students in front or behind you, but you can’t help but feel connected to them in some way. The professors are there in black cap and gown with beautifully colored scarves to denote their academic achievement. Oswald is out and about, congratulating you, taking photos, and handing out water. Staff are there for support, albeit running around, talking into headsets to ensure that the event kicks off as scheduled. Everyone is beaming with smiles and laughs. Hugs are handed out much more then handshakes. You just can’t help to feel the power of the joy that surrounds you.

So once again, congratulations Class of 2015 on reaching this monumental achievement in your life. I can honestly say that we are so proud of each of you and wish you great success on the next achievement you chose to pursue.
